I only have two goals for this series: 1) Introducing the masses to great new music and 2) Giving myself an excuse to listen to every single new release on the Tidal streaming service so I can stay up with new music. Doing this on a weekly basis means that I have a one week window to get this up before the Tidal feed flips to the next set of records, so by posting song reviews rather than full album reviews, it allows me to get more out there and then if you choose to dig deeper, you can.
So… songs of the week for the release date of 6/5/2020
- Artist: Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
- Song: “Falling Thunder”
- Album: Sideways to New Italy
- Genre: Indie Pop
- Notes: The second full length LP from this oddly named Australian group is simply filled with great indie pop hooks and upbeat melodies that are just irresistible.
- Artist: Run the Jewels
- Song: “Out of Sight”
- Album: RTJ4
- Genre: Alternative Hip-Hop
- Notes: Man, Run the Jewels are awesome. Rapper/producer El-P and the underrated Killer Mike make a fantastic duo that spit hard rhymes over really creative beats.
- Artist: Flatbush Zombies
- Song: “dirty elevator music”
- Album: Now, More Than Ever
- Genre: Hip-Hop
- Notes: A quick hitting and solid EP from this NY trio of rappers.
- Artist: Ohmme
- Song: “Ghost”
- Album: Fantasize Your Ghost
- Genre: Indie Rock
- Notes: Three piece kind of avant-garde indie rock band out of Chicago, Illinois that create a mixture of rock, pop and noise in concise hits.
- Artist: Hinds
- Song: “Riding Solo”
- Album: The Prettiest Curse
- Genre: Indie Rock
- Notes: The Prettiest Curse is the 3rd album from this all female group from Madrid, Spain. It’s indie rock at the core, mixed with a bit of garage rock and super catchy hooks.
- Artist: Ghostly Kisses
- Song: “Call My Name”
- Album: Never Let Me Go
- Genre: Dream Pop
- Notes: Gorgeous, dreamy pop songs from Margaux Sauvé, who operates under the moniker of Ghostly Kisses. This is her 4th EP and one of those records you can easily get lost in.
- Artist: Lithics
- Song: “Beat Fall”
- Album: Tower of Age
- Genre: Post-Punk
- Notes: This is the 3rd full album from this post-punk group from Portland, Oregon and it’s filled with minimal post-punk very angular rhythms.
- Artist: Katie Malco
- Song: “Animal”
- Album: Failures
- Genre: Indie Folk/Indie Rock
- Notes: Failures is a wonderful Indie record that blends folk and rock together so well, many times within the same song where it will start off with the folkiness and then gradually move into some great loud riffs.
